Teen Filmmaking Workshop
Our teen filmmaking workshop is an attempt to start the foundation of knowledge needed to be a filmmaker. Workshop 1 is composed for four parts with each workshop featuring a pre-screening discussion, a movie screening, and a post-screening review. All session will be approximately four hours and will have completely optional homework for those that want to explore the topics further.
Session 1
Intro to Filmmaking
Intro to Filmmaking
Students will discover how filmmakers use cameras, composition, movement, and visual storytelling to bring a story to life. Through hands-on activities, movie clips, and a screening of Back to the Future, participants will explore the basics of filmmaking and learn how choices behind the camera can shape what an audience sees, feels, and understands.
Session 2
Acting and Performance
Acting and Performance
Great filmmaking starts with great performances. In this session, students will explore the fundamentals of acting for the camera, including character development, physical expression, voice, timing, and working with other actors. Using The Princess Bride as a springboard, students will examine how actors bring characters and scenes to life and discover how screen acting differs from performing on stage.
Session 3
Animation Basics
Animation Basics
Animation gives filmmakers the ability to tell stories in ways that live-action filmmaking simply can't. Using Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, students will explore the principles of animation, visual style, movement, timing, and creating a unique cinematic world. Through discussion and activities, participants will discover how animators combine art and filmmaking to make audiences see familiar ideas in entirely new ways.
Session 4
Sound and Editing
Sound and Editing
A movie isn't finished when the cameras stop rolling. In this session, students will discover how sound, music, pacing, and editing transform individual shots into a compelling story. Using WALL-E and clips from other films, participants will explore how filmmakers use sound and editing to create emotion, establish rhythm, build tension, and guide an audience's attention—often without saying a word.
